Author Rebekka, Xbrick team, currently in the remote office / on workation:
I have been part of the wd3 team since 2020. First as an intern and then as a working student. This summer I am working from home in a camper with Xbrick®.
At the beginning of 2021 we converted a Mercedes Vito into a camper so that we could travel around France for 3 weeks in the summer. Our Xbrick® was always with us.
Xbrick® was always very practical when we were converting our van, so of course it had to be part of our trip. The question is: How do you fit Xbrick® into a small living space? Its rectangular shape with straight sides means it’s easy to stow away and doesn’t take up any unnecessary space. For example, we have a passage from the living space to the driver’s compartment into which an Xbrick® fits perfectly. This means the multifunctional cube is also well stowed away while driving.

During our three-week summer trip in 2021, we already noticed that Xbrick® is a perfect fit for camping life with a van and that we use it all the time – at home or on the road.
So of course it couldn’t be missing from our summer trip this year either. What makes this year different from last year? We’re on the road a little longer this time and therefore don’t just want to go on vacation, but also work on the road. An experience we’ve never had before and where we didn’t know what to expect. Will we have a good internet connection everywhere so we can work undisturbed? Can the two of us be in such a small space for so long? And what can we expect in every country we want to travel to?

The rough plan was to travel to three countries, mainly along the coast: France, northern Spain, and Portugal. We decide spontaneously when we want to be where, depending on the weather and our mood. We work from around 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and after work and on the weekends we explore the respective country.
As I said, so we did. The van was packed, the supplies full to the brim, and we were excited and curious to see what awaited us. We set off from Stuttgart through France directly to the Atlantic coast. In our first week, we always drove a little further after work to the next parking spot towards the coast. When we reached the coast, we went through northern Spain and then through Portugal down to Lisbon and back along the coast.
So what does our everyday life look like on our journey?
We are now in the 4th week of our trip, roughly halfway down the coast of Portugal. At the moment we are sitting in our camping chairs, with the Xbrick® between us as a side table for our drinks and work accessories. You can hear the sea roaring behind the dune and the sun has come out again after two days, so you can sit outside and work without any problems. Today we started work at 8 a.m. as usual and we will probably finish work at 5 p.m.
After work we first put away all our work things. In the camper it is very important to always keep things tidy so that everything has its place – otherwise chaos quickly ensues. And this is where Xbrick® comes in again. Because our van unfortunately has no standing height, we have to do a lot of things in the living area while sitting. With Xbrick® we can prepare meals comfortably while sitting down and after eating we can also do the dishes while sitting down. Xbrick® has the perfect height here, which can also be used at different seat heights thanks to the different side heights.

The different heights are also very helpful if you want to do sports with Xbrick®. Due to its lightness and the soft but firm material, Xbrick® is great for a wide range of sports exercises. And if storage space is limited, like in a camper, you can’t take so many sports equipment with you. That’s where a multi-tool like Xbrick is very useful.
The best thing is that you can easily put Xbrick® outside on dirty, dusty surfaces without having to worry about it coming back into the camper’s living area later. If Xbrick® gets very dirty, it can simply be brushed off with a brush or rinsed with water. If you want to be on the safe side, you can even disinfect the surfaces of Xbrick®. This means it can be stowed away in the camper without any problems and you don’t have any unnecessary dirt in the living area.

And how do you live and work in the camper?
I think the main difference between working from home and the new everyday working routine on the road is the environment, the landscape of the new country and everyday life as a couple in a small van. Weather permitting, you spend the whole day outside in the fresh air and this automatically gives you a bit of a change from your normal, usual everyday life. In general, you live a more minimalist life because you have less space and everything has been reduced to the bare essentials. You enjoy the little things again and appreciate things like a hot shower.

With our Xbrick® we always notice that new uses for Xbrick® are emerging, especially now that we are working while travelling, so we could no longer do without Xbrick® when we travel. Xbrick is perfect as modular camping furniture. Whether as a climbing aid when you want to get something from the camper roof, as a side table when you are working, as an indoor and outdoor stool or as a footstool for musical evenings with a guitar.

If you are travelling with a small camper, you should not do without Xbrick®. It replaces many other items that are all combined in one in the Xbrick® and is therefore the perfect furniture for campers.
When our trip is over for the time being, Xbrick® will not be left in the camper, but will serve as an everyday helper in our apartment in Stuttgart.
A real camping multi-tool.
