Ask Xbrick® (product information)
Who is Xbrick suitable for?
Xbrick is suitable for anyone who needs a lightweight module to sit on or stand on, but wants something different the next moment. For schools and daycare centres. For creative working environments and workshops. For museum didactics and events. For hotels and fitness centres. For the children’s room, the kitchen and the home office. But above all for you.
What material is Xbrick made of?
Plastic is not very sustainable in itself, that is correct, and we are constantly experimenting with other materials. However, only plastic makes Xbrick a lightweight, low-noise all-rounder that can be used outdoors. The sustainability comes from its longevity and versatility. This means that less furniture needs to be purchased and less frequently. Xbrick is also manufactured in an environmentally friendly and energy-saving way. Only water vapour is used in production – no blowing agents, plasticisers or other additives. Of course, we are also working with our partner companies to continually reduce Xbrick’s consumption of resources.
Plastic? What about sustainability?

Is Xbrick free of harmful substances?
Short: Yes. Long: Yes, Xbrick has passed the EN71-3 toy standard test and the material is approved and safe for use with food.
Where and how is Xbrick produced?
Xbrick is produced 100% in Germany. The material comes from Germany or France and production is based in Bavaria. Assembly and packaging are carried out by employees of Diakonie Stetten in Schorndorf.
Is Xbrick made from recycled material?
At the moment, only the Xbrick ocean (link) contains 15% recycled material. Our aim is to produce Xbrick with a significantly higher recycled content and with less and less new plastic as soon as possible. We are working on this goal together with our raw material suppliers.
Is Xbrick recyclable?
Yes, Xbrick is 100% recyclable. Xbricks that really can no longer be used can be sent back to us. We will check whether the Xbrick can be reconditioned and possibly reused. If this is really not possible, they are returned to the EPP material cycle.
Is Xbrick also available in other sizes?
As Xbrick should be as agile as possible when combined with each other and with all our accessories, we only have our standard size of 500 x 333 x 250 mm.
Is Xbrick fireproof?
Xbrick is made of expanded polypropylene and is therefore lightweight, robust and waterproof – but unfortunately not fireproof. However, we do have an Xbrick B1 in dark grey made of material that has been tested for flame retardancy in accordance with DIN 4102 B1. This can be used in consultation with the fire protection officers for areas with fire protection requirements.
Can Xbrick melt at high temperatures?
Yes, Xbrick deforms from 100 °C. Make sure that Xbrick is not stored at temperatures above +60 °C.
Does Xbrick lose its colour when exposed to sunlight for a long time?
he coloured Xbricks (i.e. all except black and grey) should not be stored outside or in direct sunlight. Otherwise the colour may change after a while and colour abrasion may occur.
How resilient is Xbrick?
We have tested it with up to 200 kg so far and that was no problem. It is important that the weight is evenly distributed – Xbrick does not tolerate loads with sharp objects (e.g. high heels) or at the corners.
Can Xbrick break?
Sure, you can break anything. By handling Xbrick with sharp objects, trying to break off the corners or jumping on it with pointed heels or studded shoes. Or if Xbrick is placed on a stony surface and loaded, for example. Then it can happen that Xbrick gets dents and dings and even small pieces break off. Your Xbrick may then no longer look so new, but rather used and marked by life – but even then it still fulfils all its functions and can be used. If you would like to repair or refurbish small imperfections, we have put together a few options here. (Link Repair-Manual).
Does Xbrick discolour? What happens if I accidentally hit a wall with it?
Xbrick does not discolour and does not cause scratches, so this is not a problem.
Why is Xbrick ergonomic?
Xbrick is light and quiet – so you can easily move one or more Xbricks. Everyone understands immediately how this works. This makes it easy to sit or stand differently or somewhere else. Because sitting is one of the unhealthiest postures – and even on the most ergonomic chair, the immobile sitting position puts one-sided strain on the muscles, tendons, ligaments and intervertebral discs. Lightweight furniture modules make it fun to get up more often, sit down with others and talk to each other. More exercise and easier communication are healthy, ergonomic and can make you happier. This movement-promoting effect has also been recognized by the “Federal Association for the Promotion of Posture and Movement e.V.” (Link to the certificate).
How does Xbrick feel?
The surface is rough, but feels pleasantly warm and soft.
How did Xbrick come about?
When WD3 was founded we were purely a design and development office. We have developed height-adjustable, mobile work tables for Westermann products. What was missing was the right furniture that was suitable for both sitting and standing. The inspiration for this minimal piece of furniture was the “Schnitzerkiste” made of wood, as it has been built for decades at the Berchtesgaden Sculpture School. In the first draft, Xbrick was made of felt. Because of the high demand, we needed a different manufacturing process. It was only from EPP that Xbrick became so light, robust and universally applicable.
Using Xbrick® (user instructions)
Does Xbrick slip or wobble?
Xbrick has a leather-like surface structure. This makes it anti-slip. It can still slip on very slippery floors if you jump on it, for example. This can be avoided by placing a mat or carpet underneath. Due to the manufacturing process, Xbrick is not 100% flat on the long side. As a result, minimal tipping can be noticeable on very flat floors.
Can I take Xbrick outside?
Xbrick can be used indoors and outdoors. You should store the colorful Xbrick indoors after use. We advise against a permanent installation in the open air, e.g. as a seating stand. Make sure that Xbrick is not placed on sharp stones and then put under pressure. Otherwise dents can occur, but these are purely superficial and do not affect the function.
How to clean Xbrick?
You clean Xbrick with a soft sponge with soap and water; you can also disinfect it with ethanol. If necessary, you can spray out the cavities inside with a hose. Please do not clean with a high-pressure cleaner! Of course, water can run into the cavities of the Xbrick. The cavities have slopes towards the handle holes. First shake all the water out of the handle holes and then let the Xbrick dry on the 25 x 50 cm side. See also drying instructions-Xbrick.pdf here
What happens if water or leftover food gets on the Xbrick?
EPP, the material Xbrick is made of, has very little adhesion and is very resistant to stains. It can be easily washed off with a sponge. If dirt falls into the Xbrick, simply spray it out with a hose and let it dry.
What if I drop something into the Xbrick?
Basically, what goes in can come out again. We recommend shaking the Xbrick a little and turning it. All cavities inside are open to the outside through the handle holes.
Can I open the Xbrick, for example to store something in it?
No, because Xbrick has a closed structure to be particularly stable.

How much does shipping cost?
Shipping costs depend on the size of your order and are therefore variable. You can view the shipping costs in the shopping cart. We do not have a flat rate for shipping costs, otherwise we would have to increase the product prices overall. This means you only pay the actual transport costs for your order.
When will my order be delivered? When will my order arrive? What is the status of my order?
We usually ship within 3 to 4 business days. You will receive a shipping notification from DHL including a tracking code. If your delivery comes via a shipping company, we will give you a rough time frame and the shipping company will contact you to coordinate an exact delivery date.
How is Xbrick delivered?
Xbrick comes to you in a cardboard box via DHL. You will receive a tracking link for your package. We try to avoid unnecessary packaging. You can then use the cardboard as a wastebasket, or your cats will be happy with it. Larger orders come to you via a shipping company (climate-neutral through compensation). As soon as the delivery has been picked up from our warehouse, the shipping company will contact you by email or telephone to arrange a delivery date. The shipping company delivers to the curb or at ground level to the first door. If you have any special requests for delivery, please contact us. We do our best to make it possible.
